Do you know how auto parts are cold stamped?
2020-01-17 16:28:44

Cold stamping or sheet metal stamping is a processing method of automobile stamping parts, which makes the metal sheet bear the pressure in the stamping die and be cut off or formed.

Daily necessities, such as aluminum pot, lunch box, washbasin, etc., are made by cold stamping. For example, to make a lunch box, you first need to cut a rectangular blank with four rounded corners (known as "blanking") and then use a punch to press the blank into a die to form (known as "drawing"). In the drawing process, the flat sheet becomes a box shape, with four sides vertically bent upward, and the materials at four corners gather and wrinkle can be seen.

The automotive parts processed by cold stamping are: engine oil pan, brake base plate, car frame and most of the body parts. These parts are generally formed by blanking, punching, drawing, bending, flanging, trimming and other processes. In order to make cold stamping parts, it is necessary to prepare stamping die. The die is usually divided into two pieces, one of which is installed above the press and can slide up and down, the other is installed under the press and fixed. During production, the blank is placed between two stamping dies. When the upper and lower dies are closed, the stamping process is completed. The productivity of stamping is very high, and parts with complex shape and high precision can be manufactured.

Welding is a processing method that two pieces of metal are locally heated or heated and pressurized at the same time.

We often have workers holding masks in one hand and welding tongs and welding rods connected with wires in the other hand. The welding method is called manual arc welding, which uses the high temperature generated by arc discharge to melt electrodes and weldments and make them joint.

Manual arc welding is seldom used in automobile manufacturing. Spot welding is widely used in automobile body manufacturing. Spot welding is suitable for welding thin steel plates. During operation, two electrodes apply pressure to two steel plates to make them stick together, and at the same time, the bonding points (circular with a diameter of 5-6 Ω) are heated and melted by electric current to make them firmly connected. When two body parts are welded, their edges are welded every 50-100 ° to form discontinuous multi-point connection. Welding the whole car body usually requires thousands of welding points. The strength requirement of the solder joint is very high. Each solder joint can bear the pull of 5kn, and even tear the steel plate, the solder joint can not be separated.

The common gas welding in the repair shop is a method that uses acetylene combustion and oxygen combustion to produce high temperature flame, so that the welding rod and weldment can be melted and joined. This kind of high temperature flame can also be used to cut the metal, which is called gas cutting. The application of gas welding and gas cutting is more flexible, but the heat affected zone of gas welding is larger, which makes the weldment deform and the metallographic structure change, and the performance decline. Therefore, gas welding is rarely used in automobile manufacturing.
