In the highly competitive market, some brands also said that they used all steel cab in propaganda, with guaranteed safety. The top of cab of other brands is fiberglass, similar to paper paste, with no guarantee of safety. Like many people who buy a car, clapping the door, clapping the cab and listening to the sound can feel whether the safety of a car is reliable. The all steel cab sounds like the guarantee of people and absolute safety. So is fiberglass really as vulnerable as the dealers say?

The scientific name of FRP is fiber reinforced plastics, commonly known as FRP (fiber reinforced plastics), which is fiber-reinforced composite plastics. Automobile parts are a kind of composite material with glass fiber and its products (glass cloth, belt, felt, yarn, etc.) as reinforcement material and synthetic resin as matrix material. Some domestic manufacturers have done a lot of work in the development of FRP body convenience. FAW developed FRP engine hood and flat head tilting cab a long time ago. At present, FRP products are widely used in medium and heavy trucks in China, such as some long engine covers, bumpers, front covers, cab top covers, side skirts, and air guide covers.

Due to the characteristics of less investment, short production cycle and strong designability, FRP is widely used in many places on trucks. For example, before the early years, domestic trucks were mainly long head flat head trucks, and high top trucks were not common. With the rapid development of domestic highways, the development of long-distance transportation was greatly stimulated, and the demand for high top cab tractors was strong. However, due to the difficulty in the overall steel shape design of the cab high top, the mold design cost was high, and it was easy to rust in the later stage of multi plate welding Leakage, etc. Therefore, it was the choice of many manufacturers to use fiberglass as the cab top cover. Up to now, there are still some trucks that use fiberglass as the cab top cover.

FRP has the characteristics of light weight and high strength, and its density is between 1.5-2.0. Only 1 / 4-1 / 5 of carbon steel, even lower than aluminum. Compared with 08F steel, the strength of 2.5mm thick FRP is equivalent to that of 1mm thick steel. In addition, FRP can flexibly design the product structure according to the demand, use the product to have a better overall type, with excellent technology, and can flexibly choose the molding process according to the shape, use and quantity of the product, and the molding process is simple, can be formed once, with good corrosion resistance, and has good resistance to the atmosphere, water, acid and alkali salt of general concentration, etc. So at present, the front bumper, front cover, skirt and guide cover of many trucks are made of fiberglass.

Of course, FRP also has its disadvantages. Its elastic modulus is only 1 / 10 of that of steel, which will cause low structural rigidity and easy deformation of the product. Generally, it is made up of thin shell structure, sandwich structure and stiffener. In our country, some heavy truck cabins are made of FRP roof with inner steel frame to enhance their strength. Like many materials, aging will occur when exposed to the wind and sun. Generally, the use effect will not be affected within 3-8 years. In addition, it is more troublesome to repair the damaged FRP materials.

FRP has good heat insulation, but its long-term heat resistance is poor. Glass fiber itself does not burn, but the resin contained in it is flammable. The proportion of resin in glass fiber reinforced plastics, the nature of reinforced fiber and the preparation form will determine the degree of danger. So general FRP can not be used for a long time under high temperature. In ordinary traffic accidents, some vehicles have no top cover in the driver's cab after a fire, and the front cover is actually burned.

Vehicle passive safety involves many aspects. It is not appropriate to judge the safety by a single material. But judging from the current national standards, both kinds of cabs also meet the standards. The cab with fiberglass roof is not as vulnerable as rumor. With the improvement of the mechanical manufacturing process and the strong propaganda of the manufacturers, the all steel structure cab is touted as a selling point, and compared with the fiberglass structure, the all steel structure is also easier to give people a sense of security. Of course, the strong vehicle structure is only one aspect of passive safety, and the driver's higher safety awareness can not be ignored.
